Earl Williams made custom trombones by hand from the late 1920s up until his passing in the early 1970s. Having said that, this is hands down one of the best, if not the best playing 78H I've ever come across. Above: schematic of the bores of brass instruments (diameter:length ratio exaggerated). This was a perfect opportunity for Dave to plant the seeds of one of his great ambitions, to start a trombone quartet. He only has 25 to go at this point. "I swear, it's all muscle!" he insists.

Back in the 1920s, the best french horns were coming out of Berlin from the Schmidt factory. The descriptions and pictures are spot on. The larger bore size makes playing in the low register easier and the added valves reduce some of the slide movement required to get from one note to the next.

The horn takes a smaller mouthpiece shank than normal. If your finish is especially stubborn, you can wipe it down with paint stripper, and then fine it down. The versatility of the trombone allows a player to focus on either a bright, focused sound to be used in jazz ensembles, or a rich and dark sound to be used in orchestral playing. This one is a solid player and I think it plays very well. Let it sit for about an hour, depending on how tarnished they are.

This one is in fantastic condition, recently overhauled here at The Brassark. Its popularity waned during the 18th century when musicians and composers prefered the horns. This article originally appeared in the November 2004 issue of Electronic Musician magazine. Byron Peebles mentioned to me that after the move from New York to Elkhart, Bach had a stash of Mt Vernon horns in backstock that were available to prominent players, these were stamped in the 8000 serial number range. Stacked thayers are a thing of engineering beauty in the world of bass trombone.
