The trombone sounds as written which is different from other brass instruments. He has managed to promote trombone playing at home by raising three children; two have adopted the trombone as their instrument of choice, the third plays the trombone part time along with flute and piccolo, the wife still refuses. The sound is really good quality, a velvet tone that isn't too edgy but has a clearly defined front to the note. Shires to answer the call for something a little bigger than the original Michael Davis trombone.

It was not until the "big band" era of swing came about in the mid-1920s that the trombone began to be used as a solo instrument. The next higher partials—B♭4 (a major second higher), C5 (a major second higher), D5 (a major second higher)—do not require much adjustment for even-tempered intonation, but E♭ (a minor second higher)is almost exactly a quarter tone higher than it would be in twelve-tone equal temperament. The historical descriptions of the sound of these older, period instruments are few and far between.

It can support the tuba with an octave, the sound complements the horn's, the Euphonium can be used with a woodwind line to add strength, it can soften the trombone section, and I have even sometimes seen it share a flute part. The trombone is of ancient origin; the slide, or the principle of elongating a brass instrument by tubes within tubes, has been credited to Tyrataeus in 685 B. The piece, which calls for 3 trombones, is later performed at Salieri’s own funeral.
