Parent councils, community school boards, and charter schools seemed to offer parents more power. Parents need to be as involved as they can and others must accept that. We have made our position on grammar schools clear over the last two years. Through classroom/grade level newsletters or reminders at conference time, teachers can encourage parents to use these strategies to motivate students. Unite the various educational interests in the new drive to raise standards. Teachers and parents in my study believe that some parents have self-serving reasons for becoming involved in schools.

When Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Virginia, implemented an interactive voicemail, for instance, the school saw parental attendance at freshmen orientation jump from 50 to 1,000 (Viadero, 1997). After full consultation the appropriate legislation was enacted with all-party support. In order for the program to qualify for federal and state grants, we have to incorporate In-kind that involves the parents and community members. Relating classroom activities to the varying needs and interests of children and families is another reflection of a family-centered program. When a student has to change their answers so that not all of them are correct because they feel as though being smart and getting A’s isn’t “cool”, it’s a sign that things have gone too far.

I told them exactly what they would be doing in the room, who would be working with the children directly and who would be doing prep work.
