The advent of more complex electronic effects was well put to use by the Heavy Metal musicians. The most popular type of classical music to come out of the Baroque era was the opera. In the mid-1980s I was taken to the opera for the first time. Four short motives combine to form a long lyrical melody. Many of his symphonies are string focused 3 movement forms. The term "mannerism" was applied by later scholars, as it often is, in response to an impression of sophistication being practised for its own sake, a malady which some authors have felt infected the Ars subtilior.

[8] Themes concerning rural laborers and their sexuality are common, and there are many ballads based on the Robin Hood legend. [11] Another common feature of ballads is repetition, sometimes of fourth lines in succeeding stanzas, as a refrain, sometimes of third and fourth lines of a stanza and sometimes of entire stanzas.
