Who's sonata's were the most important in keyboard literature? An example of this type, which appeared at the beginning of the 18th century, was Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro (1786). It had both lofty and comic strains, which were in time separated into distinct genres, the opera seria (serious opera) and the opera buffa (comic opera). The most common popular song forms played in jazz are of the AABA, 32- bar type, the 32-bars divided into eight-bar phrases (" The Man I Love " or " I Got Rhythm " are typical).

Opera was born in Italy at the end of the 16th century. Bach usually based the music of each of his cantatas upon the melody of a single Lutheran chorale. These texts can be either sacred or secular in subject, and with Latin and French mixed. They want you to notice that they’re listening to it, and (unless you’re bumping it, too) they want you to be offended about it. Chorales tend to have simple and singable tunes, because they were originally intended to be sung by the congregation rather than a professional choir.
