Growing up in a small Midwestern town, the son of a divorced Latina who worked three jobs, James would have felt like an outsider even if it weren't for his sexuality. Such organizational recognition of homophobia has been important in changing attitudes about homosexuality. There are a lot of reasons that this might occur: Many people experiment sexually with the same sex even if they are heterosexual. Adolescents with gender identity disorder are prone to low self-esteem, social isolation, and distress, and are especially vulnerable to depression and suicide. Are there any limits upon the forms of acceptable sado-masochism or fetishism? While these feelings are real and may feel overwhelming at times, they seem to be a response to myths and negative, self-defeating stereotypes. While the entire city seems safe for lesbians to live, areas around the universities as well as places like the Crafts Avenue and Main Street attract most lesbian visitors.

Many, but not all of these risk factors for psychological disorder (for instance, victimisation) can apply equally to GLBT and heterosexual groups. Of the estimated 1.6 million homeless American youth, up to 42 percent identify as lesbian or gay, and a disproportionate number identify as bisexual or transgender. Duffy and Rusbult (1986) asked gay, lesbian, and straight couples about their longest relationship and monogamy: for gay men, their longest relationship was on average 30 months, and 59% had been monogamous for straight men, their longest relationship was on average 53 months, and 88% had been monogamous for straight women, their longest relationship was on average 65 months, and 76% had been monogamous for lesbians, their longest relationship was on average 54 months, and 96% had been monogamous Clearly, 30 years ago non-monogamy was something considered by both straight and gay/lesbian people.

The Integrated Household Survey, [47] produced by the Office of National Statistics, gives the following figures for the period April 2011 to March 2012: 93.9 per cent of adults identified themselves as Heterosexual/Straight. 1.1 per cent of the surveyed UK population, approximately 545,000 adults, identified themselves as Gay or Lesbian. 0.4 per cent of the surveyed UK population, approximately 220,000 adults, identified themselves as Bisexual. 3.6 per cent of adults stated "Don't know" or refused to answer the question. 0.6 per cent of respondents provided "No response" to the question. 2.7 per cent of 16- to 24-year-olds in the UK identified themselves as Gay, Lesbian or Bisexual compared with 0.4 per cent of 65-year-olds and over.
