The defendant was acquitted of the murder charge. Children who are victims of abuse or neglect need a safe place to talk about what happened to them and to get the medical care they need. A reconsideration of one's career, marriage and family are all likely to occur. This is still a serious crime because the maximum punishment is five years in prison. A victim may also be less likely to divulge what happened if he or she has had trouble with grades, behavior problems or other difficulties -- some of which are likely attributable to the abuse.
